$50 Bucks Says We Will Knock Block Off Your Back!

Submitted by taxman on January 30, 2009 - 11:25pm.

We have caller's call our office all the time and ask us about our pricing.  They usually ask "how much do you charge to do xyz?"  We try and ask the proper questions so that we can provide a good faith estimate.  The next thing we hear is "That is more than H&R Block".

Allow me to share a secret with you that most folks don't know.  We are a CPA firm.  As a CPA firm we have a higher professional standard than  H&R Block.  Therefore, if we are higher it is justified.

The fact is, I have never seen a bill from H&R Block that was cheaper than my bill on a similar return in the next filing season.  You just read it once but let me put it another way.  In 19+ years of preparing tax returns I have never seen an H&R Block bill that was less expensive than our bill on a similar tax return and that is comparing their previous years bill with our current year bill.

2010 Filing Delay

Submitted by taxman on December 28, 2010 - 11:13am.

It is now official.  Due to the late action by our Congress three different groups will have to wait until mid to late February to file their income tax returns.  The groups that will be affected are:

  1. Itemized filers
  2. People claiming higher education deductions (Not the education credits)
  3. Those claiming educator expenses

Here is the official IRS announcement .  It is a failure of our Congress to act in a timely manner so feel free to let them know what you think about their lack of responsibility.  For those that have children in higher education, the deadline to submit your tax returns for financial assistance is March 1.  See what great stuff the government does for us.

How We Reduce Errors For Tax Preparation

Submitted by taxman on April 30, 2009 - 3:27am.

It may seem strange to some that I would be willing to share one of our internal business processes.  I really feel that I have nothing to hide from clients or anyone else so I am very open about what we do and how we do it.  In fact, I am proud of what we do and how we do it.  Sharing these processes with clients simply serves to affirm what we do and educate them as to how to allow us to provide the level of service that we aspire to deliver.

IRS Pressing the Issue on Head of Household and EIC

Submitted by taxman on January 22, 2009 - 10:19pm.

The IRS is trying to clean up the slew of people that report Head of Household and claim EIC.  That have instituted new due diligence requirements for tax preparers designed to make the client really follow the rules of eligibility for this filing status and refundable tax credit.  What the taxpayer will be hearing from "Qualified" preparers this year is a list of questions designed by the IRS to help determine the eligibility for a the Head of Household filing status and the eligibility to receive EIC.

I personally don't like the questions they are making me ask this year but I applaud them in what they are attempting to do.  The problem, as reported today on Fox 6 News, is that many tax preparers are just not following the rules.  What you should know is that unless a tax preparer has some kind of professional license (Certified Public Accountant, Public Accountant, Enrolled Agent, etc..) then they likely do not answer to any higher authority than the customer.  So pick your preparer with care.  You are responsible for the contents of your return.

Homeowner's Catch Some Tax Breaks For 2008 and 2009

Submitted by taxman on December 26, 2008 - 9:21am.

For the 2008 tax year homeowner's will be getting a tax break for property taxes even if they are unable to itemize.  The deduction will be added to the standard deduction and is the lessor of actual property tax or $500 per taxpayer ($1000 for Married filing joint).  I think it is interesting that Congress feels that it is important enough to address this issue then limit the deduction to $500 per taxpayer.  That comes straight from the political handbook of tell them your helping them then take it back.

BEWARE THE IRS

Submitted by taxman on July 1, 2008 - 11:57am.
I recently had a client that had an issue with the IRS. This is their story and how it all turned out. The very start of the story began with us making a mistake on their 2006 tax return. We left a zero off of a deduction that cost the taxpayer a substantial deduction. The return had been transmitted before the taxpayer discovered the error. The balance due on the original return had not been paid. In our defense, the deduction was verbally stated and undocumented to us so it was impossible to discover the error with our review process. There is a lesson in that, but I digress.

New Tax Credits Mean Bigger Refunds For Most

Submitted by taxman on January 18, 2007 - 11:46am.
There are two hot tax topics that are new for the 2006 filing season (that is right now). One biggie is the telephone excise tax refund which can only be claimed on your 2006 return. This is actually a refund of excise taxes that were charged on our phone bills on long distance telephone calls after February 28th, 2003. The IRS lost the right to charge this tax in Court then lost 5 different Federal Appeals before they gave up and quit charging us the tax on long distance phone services. The refund applies to individuals, businesses, and tax exempt organizations. The refund applies to any phone, including cell phones, and bundled services. There are different rules for each group so how you apply for it will vary.
