How We Reduce Errors For Tax PreparationSubmitted by taxman on April 30, 2009 - 3:27am.
It may seem strange to some that I would be willing to share one of our internal business processes. I really feel that I have nothing to hide from clients or anyone else so I am very open about what we do and how we do it. In fact, I am proud of what we do and how we do it. Sharing these processes with clients simply serves to affirm what we do and educate them as to how to allow us to provide the level of service that we aspire to deliver. My purpose for sharing this is to help my clients get the best service that we can deliver. THE CHALLENGE: With personal income tax preparation the challenge is that you never know what the bottom line is supposed to be. That may not seem important but as a CPA I like things that are checked and cross checked. Personal income tax preparation just does not work that way. The output possibilities are endless, and the target is forever in motion due to tax law changes. Mix in the uniqueness of each individual taxpayer and it is a tremendous challenge to prepare and know with certainty that what you have done is correct, complete, and the very best that can legally be done for the taxpayer. THE SOLUTION: We spend thousands of dollars every year on education and training just to refresh our knowledge and to keep up with the changes. I personally spend 16 hours a year in the classroom as a student. Then I take that information back to the office and spend training time with our staff going over the changes and important reminders and strategies to help our clients with the taxes. We apply that knowledge and training during tax preparation. When a preparer prepares a return they review the return prior to giving the client the results. Then after the client has departed, and before the return is transmitted to the IRS, another preparer reviews the return checking for both completeness and correctness. THIS IS VITALLY IMPORTANT TO YOU! This is important to you because this is the final filter to catch errors and omissions. If the information used to prepare the return is not written down then the review process can not catch and correct errors. ATTENTION: That is so important I am going to type it again, if the information used to prepare the return is not written down then the review process can not catch and correct errors. Here is my formula that our clients should use to receive the best preparation services we can provide. 1. If you have anything more than W-2s and childcare expenses then you should call our office and get an organizer. 2. Complete the organizer and schedule an appointment for your tax preparation. Provide us with the documentation that the organizer will prompt you to provide. Relax knowing that you are receiving professional tax preparation services.
